Char

 

Genus Salvelinus and Salmo / onycorhynus Differences are in their colour , Char have light markings on a dark background, whereas salmon and trout are the converse

They are only found in cold water

 

Arctic Char Salvelinus alpinus are found above latitude 64 c Arctic char. As with char they live in both freshwater and saltwater. In the UK they are very occasionally found in deep lakes, mainly in Scotland left over from the last ice age as the glaciers retreated. They are the most northerly of the freshwater fish. They are commenly found through Canada, Scandanvia and and Russia. There appearance is very like salmonoids and they vary in size up to 32 lbs in Labrador.

   

Dolly Varden Salvelinus malma malma. These are found like char in both freahwater and in the anandromous form where they migrate to sea. The unusual name eminates from a character by Charles Dickens novel Barnaby Rudge. They have very characteristic coloured mainoy reddish spots.

   

 

Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis is a member of the in the salmon family. It is also referred to as the speckeled trout but is in fact a char. Like other members of the salmanoid and char can also be migratory/ anandromous . They are found in rivers and creeks in Canada and USA. They vary in size from 9-26 ins and weigh up to 7lbs but most are considerable smaller.

Most live in clear brooks and rivers and are very where they are very suseptible to pollution a small number migrate to the sea and then return as larger sea run brook trout . Brook trout are frequently caught on the fly and often as a by-catch when salmon fishing.

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is a freshwater Char living mainly in North American Lakes, notably the Great lakes but now more renowned in the Northern Canadian lakes

Lake trout are the largest of the chars, the record weighing 102lbs. They either feed on plankton, the slower growing variety or fish eating which grow more rapidly.
