Scotland

Scotland is famous for the home of salmon fishing, the largest UK rod caught salmon, and the longest salmon season which extends on different river systems from the 11th January to 30th November. In addition to salmon the other fish species include trout, sea-trout , arctic char ( isolated from the last ice-age) pike and grayling.

There are hundred of river systems, the largest of which is the Tay which is notable for Miss Ballantines 64lb salmon landed in 1922. This is a vast river system which requires boat access in the lower sections.
Scotland has over six thousand lochs, and hundreds of rivers. The most famous rivers are the Tay, Spey, Dee and the Tweed. All of these rivers are East coast rivers which have avoided the blight of salmon farming. The largest and the most productive of these is the Tay. The others are the Spey which is the fasted flowing Scottish river and the home of Spey casting. The Dee which is the most productive spring salmon fishery and renowned for it's large salmon runs and the Tweed which has the longest salmon season from 1st of February to the 30th of November, and is the most productive salmon fly water in the UK .

The Lochy in the 1980’s it was one of Scotlands most productive rivers. It then declined rapidly as a result of fish farming, poaching and damage from forestry plantations in the headwaters. It is the former that has been the curse of the West Coast salmon fisheries where relentless over stocked fish pens, in the rivermouths produce an over infestation of fish lice, which devastates the migrating smolts. Good fishery management has reduced fish farming to alternate years and this has been mirrored by several years later similar return of salmon. Perhaps there can be no evidence more conclusive of the impact of intensive fish farming all to often denied by politicians.
